kaya is 6.5 years old now. she is now a senior citizen. rob says she's not, but rotties only have a 9 year life span, so 6.5 means she's 2/3rds of the way thru her life! she may have 3 years left with us! (i hope we get more years with her, but not at the cost of her health/wellbeing. i'd rather lose her while she is still comfortable, rather than after much suffering.)
anyway, while trying to make sure we have as much video of ozzy as we did of mimi as a baby, i realized that we stopped video taping kaya and her antics after she grew out of her puppyhood. and given the limited amount of time we have with her, compared to the lifetime will have with our kids, i thought it was important to video tape some of kaya thru her years with us.
so here's a video of one of kaya's best characteristics...fetching. that is, she gets me stuff through out the day. i like to say that i have her do it because she needs to feel like a contributing member of the family and needs a job to earn treats, but really i make her do it because often times i'm too tired to get up and fetch some things myself.
the downside to this is that whenever she has a hankering for a treat (which is pretty much 24/7...i think she's part rottweiler and part yawning chasm.), she'll go bring me random stuff that i've never asked for. just go around the house, and the conversation with herself probably sounds like this: "oooooh this bit of trash looks like something mom would like. better take it to mom for a treat. she'll love me for this." then she stands by me holding that object in her mouth and looking dolefully at me with those sweet, soulful brown eyes, and of course, i have to give her a treat. i know, i know. (shaking my head). total pushover.
by the end of the day, i'll have a collection of toys from mimi's room, a slipper, a plastic baggie, random pieces of trash and about 500 diapers. once, she retrieved a print out from our printer for me...but that turned out to not be a good thing, because she also drooled all over the document and brought it to me with the ink smeared up in slimely blotches, not to mention the big crease that she left in the middle from where she grabbed it. she's not the most, well, delicate, shall we say, creature this side of the universe. but dammit, she's still such a sweet girl. what would i do without her? (okay, after watching this video a couple of times, i just started to really hear myself...why is it when i'm speaking to kaya and she's starting to have a hard time getting it, i change my way of speaking? i start off with a normal doggie talking voice, but then it starts to change over to sounding weird, like i've suddenly lost command of the english language, and i'm just starting to learn how to speak. like i'm talking to a cave man or some one fresh off the boat? yikes! is that how i sound? really?! wow. embarrassing.)
