was struck today by how much mimi's drawings have evolved in the past year or so. Here are two pictures she drew May 2007 when she was 3 y 2 mos old (click on pictures to see details closer):

then, remember this picture that mimi drew last august 2007 at 3 y 5 mo? clean, simple, but well drawn, nicely balanced. it's my favorite of all of her pictures.

today, i asked mimi to draw a special picture for Mrs Brown's birthday (she is the beloved director of mimi's school). here's what she drew: the rooftops of the castle took considerable time to draw and color, but her concentration and focus is good enough that she can stick to it. the circles coming off of the people are thought bubbles showing their wishful thoughts. mimi told me the princess "is dreaming about marrying the knight." and the king is "dreaming about marrying the queen." and the queen is "dreaming about her birthday party."
the giant whistle shaped thing is a machine that makes everything work in the house, like electricity, water, etc. it is plugged into an electrical outlet just outside the castle. she knows that something is making all the utilities in a house work, so this is her 4 year old brain's answer to that mystery.
i also liked that she added a doorbell to the castle.
the sun has a sad face b/c mimi wanted to use yellow to draw it but you couldnt see the sun because the color was so light (it's located by the red chimney), so i told her to use a goldenrod colored marker instead and she complained that it wasnt a pretty color, but used it anyway, but made the sun look sad, saying 'mom, he's not happy because he doesnt like this color."
all the color choices were her own otherwise. i kept trying to butt in and offer suggestions but she held firm to her own choices and in the end i think it turned out nice. it taught me to let her be her own person and not try to keep inflicting my own self onto her. just let her be her own person. i'm glad her confidence in herself is strong enough to overcome my meddling ways!
