if you know typical preschooler fare, you probably know it's usually white, sweet/salty, plain. like mac and cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, pb&j on white bread, flavored yogurt, chicken nuggets w/dipping sauce, french fries w/ketchup.
mimi used to be a pretty good eater, eating pretty much whatever i gave her, even some of the super spicy korean dishes. at the tail end of toddlerhood into preschooler, she started to get increasingly picky...sometimes refusing to even taste something if it didnt look 'right.' she used to eat spaghetti w/marina sauce, but even that has been dropped from her list of foods-i-like.
so it was with no real expectation that she would eat it, that i served stuffed cabbages for dinner last night. i set it in front of her w/o saying anything but try this, it's stuffed cabbages. and even as i was saying that i was mentally taking account what i had in the fridge to give her if she refused this for dinner. which is fine b/c i didnt have anything else on the table that i knew she enjoyed and that's a little unfair. to my surprise though, she took up her fork, picked up a long piece of cabbage smothered in tomato sauce and slurped it down, chewed thoughtfully, and kept dipping her fork back into her bowl for more. as her bowl started to empty, i carefully added a few more pieces of stuffed cabbage into her bowl and watched with fascination as she methodically ate forkful after forkful. i was flabbergasted.
who would have ever thought stuffed cabbages would make the cut?
now her list of foods she'll eat for dinner are: penne fra diavolo, stuffed cabbages, cheese pizza, chicken fingers/fries, fish sandwiches w/tartar sauce, vietnamese pho noodle soup, japanese udon soup, miso soup w/ rice and lots of tofu, korean tofu soup (soon dooboo), korean flat noodle soup (kal guksu), chicken quesadillas, tomato soup w/a sammy, salad with a balsamic vinaigrette, korean bbq spare ribs, and boiled chicken lightly salted. there's a few more items she will eat, but it's hit or miss often times.
one night for dinner she told me she needed to eat broccoli. i asked her why and she said she ate something pink today and needed to eat something green to make her normal. (we read a story called Pinkalicious where the girl turns pink from eating too much pink candy/icing and the remedy was to eat healthy green food). of course i was happy to oblige.
