Ozzy: the speech timeline

dont ever ask me to, just off the top of my head, tell you when Ozzy started to do/say things...i have to think long and hard, go back thru my blogs, remember specific calendar holidays/events that i have aligned an action to, tunnel thru the swiss cheese holes of my brain to remember all the stuff that i can barely keep from spilling through my sieve-like mommy brain that cant hold a single thought, except for the day by day minutiae that i must remember to keep my children from starving or being left behind.

this is going to be my ongoing list where i keep his language (spoken/signed or understood) development documented, so no one will ever have to ask me to remember when for them. (to see an ongoing chart of words signed/spoken by age click here)

4 months
  • makes raspberries, ahhhh and aye sounds.
5 months:
  • when i say peekaboo! he'll grab his blanket and cover his head with it.
  • when tapping his chin or mouth, he makes babababa sounds.
7 months:
  • says baba, yaya, wawa
  • can make clicking sound with tongue and can wag his tongue to make that funny bubbling sound (not sure what that is called!)

8 months:
  • when i tell him to wave, he puts his hand out, flapping fingers.
  • when i tell him to clap your hands or jahk jahk goong he claps his hands together
  • when i say manseh (or arms up!), he puts both of his arms up high in the air.
  • when i say milk? he signs milk (open and closes hands. but i'm not sure he really understood what it meant)
  • signs more when he runs out of baby puffs (pats his finger tips together)
  • signs all done! (he spreads out his hands wide and does a little shrug. the real ASL sign is supposed to look like youre using your two hands to push something out of your way)
  • says nanana
  • says Dada (when he sees Rob/daddy and when he sees mimi.
  • says uhmMAH! (korean word for mama. he does not say this enough, in my humble opinion. at least not to a satisfactory ratio to Dada.)
9 months:
  • Daw! ("dog". honestly, i think this may have been his first REAL word. whenever he said it, he'd be clearly looking at kaya or another dog and then would follow the word with his funny barking sound aff! aff! and get all excited. tho he said 'dada' first, it was never very clear if he fully understood what it meant, until later this month)
  • AFF! AFF! (dog bark. with little jumps for emphasis)
  • pohpoh (korean work for 'kiss') he'll come at you with his mouth wide to plant a big juicy kiss on your face.
  • when i tell him to dance, he does a bouncing dance. (he'll also do it whenever he hears music. it could be a passing ice cream truck and he'll stop what he's doing and if he's sitting, he will stand up, to do his bobbing dance)
  • lots of excited high pitched screaming

10 months:
  • says hababa (when he sees Rob's dad. hal-ah-buh-gi is the korean word for grandfather)
  • says nigh nigh (he says plaintively when he's sleepy/tired)
  • signs drink (forefinger in mouth, rest of fingers make a fist, like he's holding a cup, tips his head back like he's taking a swig)
  • when i say blink your eyes, he shuts his eyes tight for a second and then opens them.
  • when i ask where's your mouth? touches his mouth with his finger, then opens his mouth wide.
  • signs milk (open and closes hand) and tugs on my shirt when he wants to nurse. he could sign it on cue months ago, but now he associates the sign with nursing and uses it specifically when he'd like to latch on, mostly for comfort to ease into sleep. if he wants his bottle of milk or cup of water, he uses the 'drink' sign.
  • frequently says "ahht". not sure what that means yet.
  • when i ask him, "May I have it? Thank you!" he hands me whatever he's holding. if he's not holding anything he just holds out his empty, open hand.
  • LOVES the song The Itsy Bitsy Spider and will try to do the little hand motions when i sing it for him.
  • says "hi' at random moments but refuses to repeat the sound when we ply him for more.
11 months:
  • poopoo when i ask him if he did poopoo, he says "pahpah" and then grunts heavily like he's trying to have a movement.
  • when i say, gimme five! and hold out my hand, he'll slap it with his hand
  • makes kissing noises
  • blows out air (trying to teach him how to blow out a candle!)
  • says go! go! go! he says as he races up the stairs, or after slying looking at me just before he prepares to run away from me.
  • is beginning to do that funny babbling where it sounds like he's speaking some language other than english. none of it is recognizable, but it's a steady stream (with intonations that resembles some of the American Indian languages i've heard on t.v. and dances with wolves) and he's totally deadpan like he thinks he's really saying something. and maybe he really is. maybe he is like Stewie from The Family Guy and in his mind his speech is quite sophisticated. and British. and he's plotting world domination. at least over remote controls. and whatever mimi has in front of her at any given moment.
  • 11.5 months:
  • when i say 'blow' he blows out air. we've been training for the big event (first birthday candle blowing), with me singing Happy Birthday in english and korean and ending with him puffing out the candle.
  • when i ask, "where's your nose?" he points to his nose.
  • when i put the phone to his ear, sometimes he says, "hi, dada"
  • pretends to talk on the phone (using real phones and play phones). sometimes he'll text ;)
  • signs banana. instead of using a finger to represent the banana he uses his fist and then pretends to "peel" it using the other hand.
  • made up his own request sign. one open hand, the other taps or strokes it, like he wants me to put something in his hand. often he'll point towards an object then make the sign, or hand me something that he would like me to open or give him to eat.
12months
  • points to things he wants and says "dis?" almost sounds like he's saying 'this' as in 'i want this."
  • says "up" to be lifted up.
  • when asked what a cow says he says "moe-moe"
  • climbs into his highchair when he is hungry and fusses until i bring him food. OR if he sees me making his meals, he runs over to his highchair and climbs in, ready to be fed!
  • signs 'eat' by tapping his fingers on his lips when he wants to eat.
13 months
  • nods yes
  • says "dawch!" when he wants 'down' from his high chair
  • signs "book" by extending out both hands, palms up. (he loves books. certain ones make him laugh and laugh... No! David!, Yummy! Yucky!, and PeekAWho)
  • signs 'candy'. his sign cracks me up because it really doesnt look much like the ASL sign for candy. this is how he does it: he puts his hand in front of his face and waggles his fingers. and when i ask him, "candy?" he responds with two curt nods.
14 months old
  • signs hot by blowing, like he's trying to cool it off
  • signs cheese by rubbing his hands together
  • started repeating words that i say 'grapes?- 'dapes' water-"dawter" help- owp
  • calls for Rob "Ob!"
  • says 'boo' when he's playing peekaboo.

Rainbow Magic Birthday (Mimi's 7th Birthday)

this year was a particularly difficult year to plan mimi's birthday.  after rob's dad became terminally ill, i didnt think it was good time for a party for mimi and her friends, so we decided it was best to skip a party this year and just have a quiet family dinner out.  then after dad passed and we slowly started to get back into our routines again, we all began to feel bad about not having a party for mimi, so we decided to have a party after all...although, a much belated party. mimi said she really wanted to have a party here at the house.  she really really really wanted it here, so i told her she could, if she kept it small.  since she was turning seven, i allowed her to invite seven friends. then i tasked her with thinking up a theme, and she finally settled on a favorite book series of hers called Rainbow Magic .  how perfect...each of the book sets in the series showcases 7 fairies, whether they be the rainbow fairies, the gem fairies, the party fai...

Gardening My Albatross

sometimes when i think about giving up on life in general, and sitting like a blob all day, unbidden my mind fills up with images of a neglected garden turning brown, rotting, dying, and thats often enough motivation to keep going, if for no other reason than to prevent the desolation from becoming reality.  is it weird that when i think of dying one day, that i get sad knowing my garden will die when i am gone?  i dont think anyone else would go tend to it when i am no longer around.  i hope they will at least keep a plant or two in remembrance of me, but the little pollinator waystation i've been working for several years now to create will likely be razed and no more.

Growing Things

it's crazy how long it's been since the last time i blogged here.  i spend so much time on insta and facebook, this blog has been largely ignored.  i'm on my second year of gardening and have been trying to maintaining a physical gardening log and failed at several attempts.  So i think this may be my best bet.  So here's the first gardening entry! Today is March 29th, 2022. Temps today were unseasonably cold and have been for the past three days.  Todays high temp was 47F and the low tonight will be 22F.  But should warm to the low 70s tomorrow.    This crazy cold and heavy winds yesterday blew down several daffodils.  many are leaning but upright enough that i left them and only pruned the ones that were knocked to the ground.
