i'm growing up, so you better get this potty started!

ozzy (1 yr 8 mos 1 wk)  has been doing incredibly well with potty training.  i had heard from some people that boys are notoriously slower to train.  but i also read that kids who are early walkers also tend to be early talkers and early to potty train...something to do with how fast their muscles develop...leg muscles, oral muscles, pee muscles...  rob's mom told me rob potty trained by two, so maybe ozzy is following in his footsteps!

today, ozzy had his diapers off for most of the day and every time he needed to pee he'd tell me 'mommy, pee pee' and would go pee in either the bjorn sit down potty or the peter potty standy uppy potty or use the regular toilet while standing on a step stool (whatever happens to be closer to where we are at the time).  he seems to love that i give him complete and absolute attention during these times.  i dont know if that is why he goes so frequently (to get that guaranteed attention from me), or if he still lacks the muscle control to go for longer spells between...maybe a combination of both?

he's getting so used to using the potty now that he doesnt even demand that i give him water to flush down several times or a treat.  at one point, i let him have a gummy bear as an incentive for using the potty instead of peeing on the floor.  after the second day of gummy bears, he stopped asking for them and seemed perfectly happy with hugs and kisses from mommy for going potty instead.  and of course when he didnt ask, i didnt offer or remind him of his treat.

later, tho, he did ask me for some 'tandy' (candy) just randomly, and i gave him one gummy bear and when he walked away with it, i dumped the rest of them out of the bag and hid them.  a few minutes later he came back and asked for "more tandy?"  and i showed him the empty bag and said, "all gone!  you ate the last one.  no more.  sorry."  and he repeats, "all gone!" and walks away to go play with toys.  he hasnt asked for any 'tandy' since then.  heh heh.  see?  i'm smarter than the average bear.

today he showed me that he can recognize the urge to poop as well.  he had had a couple of poop accidents in the beginning, but today, he told me, "mom, change diaper?  please?"  even though he wasnt wearing any diapers.

so i said, do you want mommy put a diaper on you?

"uh-huh."  he says.  "poo poo."

so i put a diaper on him and within the next few minutes he poops into his diaper and then comes back to me and says again, 'mom.  change diaper.  poo poo." and sure enough, he's pooped in his diaper.  and he doesnt want a new diaper after i've cleaned him.  he just wiggles away from me bare-assed and happy to be nekkid.

later when he asked for a diaper to poop in, i tried to see if he would like to try and sit on the sit down potty to poop, but he told me no and did not want to sit on it and kept telling me he wanted a diaper, so i didnt push it and gave him the diaper.

so he's doing well with the pee training while he can go diaperless.  when we are out and about, he is just fine with using the diapers, and doesnt tell me he's gotta pee/poop.  transitioning from diapers to underwear will be tricky since they forget they are not wearing diapers.  he is doing pretty well with day time pee training at home, so i might start giving the training pants a try with him in the next month and see how he does.

ozzy is still co-sleeping with me and i think i will continue to do this for a while longer, until he gets night time pee trained.  it will make getting up in the middle of the night to rush him to the bathroom that much easier if we're in the same room.  maybe ozzy and i will move into his bedroom next month...he can get in and out of his bed easier than mine.

as i write this, i am remembering the nights when mimi used to run into my room crying that she had to pee, and me, bleary eyed at 3 a.m. in the morning, staggering to escourt a wailing mimi to the bathroom because she would only use the real toilet, no potties ever, and then basically laying on the bathroom floor trying to catch another minute of sleep while she did her business.

i am a little worried about him waking from his sleep to pee.  he hates to be woken up.  gets really ornery.  might have to start moving his pre-sleep milk to an hour before sleep time to make sure he gets a chance to pee it out before sleeping if it's a problem.

  1. skip the training pants/pullups. They'll just confuse him and it sounds like He SO doesn't need them. I am so jealous. Just put him in underwear and he'll very quickly see that he will need to use the potty and not pee in them or else he'll be all wet. Night-time may be a different story though....if he stays in a diaper/pullup at night, he'll probably just happily continue peeing in them and not bother to wake up to go potty. That is what Adam does and I don't see it ending ANYTIME soon. I almost think if we want to get him night-time trained we need to ditch the pullups altogether. I'm just not ready to go there yet.....Go Ozzy!

Rainbow Magic Birthday (Mimi's 7th Birthday)

this year was a particularly difficult year to plan mimi's birthday.  after rob's dad became terminally ill, i didnt think it was good time for a party for mimi and her friends, so we decided it was best to skip a party this year and just have a quiet family dinner out.  then after dad passed and we slowly started to get back into our routines again, we all began to feel bad about not having a party for mimi, so we decided to have a party after all...although, a much belated party. mimi said she really wanted to have a party here at the house.  she really really really wanted it here, so i told her she could, if she kept it small.  since she was turning seven, i allowed her to invite seven friends. then i tasked her with thinking up a theme, and she finally settled on a favorite book series of hers called Rainbow Magic .  how perfect...each of the book sets in the series showcases 7 fairies, whether they be the rainbow fairies, the gem fairies, the party fai...

Gardening My Albatross

sometimes when i think about giving up on life in general, and sitting like a blob all day, unbidden my mind fills up with images of a neglected garden turning brown, rotting, dying, and thats often enough motivation to keep going, if for no other reason than to prevent the desolation from becoming reality.  is it weird that when i think of dying one day, that i get sad knowing my garden will die when i am gone?  i dont think anyone else would go tend to it when i am no longer around.  i hope they will at least keep a plant or two in remembrance of me, but the little pollinator waystation i've been working for several years now to create will likely be razed and no more.

Growing Things

it's crazy how long it's been since the last time i blogged here.  i spend so much time on insta and facebook, this blog has been largely ignored.  i'm on my second year of gardening and have been trying to maintaining a physical gardening log and failed at several attempts.  So i think this may be my best bet.  So here's the first gardening entry! Today is March 29th, 2022. Temps today were unseasonably cold and have been for the past three days.  Todays high temp was 47F and the low tonight will be 22F.  But should warm to the low 70s tomorrow.    This crazy cold and heavy winds yesterday blew down several daffodils.  many are leaning but upright enough that i left them and only pruned the ones that were knocked to the ground.
