Ozzy's 4 month check up and development

mimi begged to hold ozzy. she is so proud to be able to hold him. it makes her feel so grown up and capable. guess kaya wanted to get her picture taken too. after i took the first picture, kaya, nonchalantly, sidles up to the kids and is like 'ho-de-do-do-hum, i'm just going to stand here for a second. oh, are you taking pictures? i didnt notice.'

saw the ped for his 4 month check up. all is well. i was concerned about his weight gain, which i think has slowed a lot. at first he was gaining a pound a week (the ped told me to slow it down), then we went on all breast milk and he gained barely a pound a month! he does seem to be fussing for more milk though, so i am latching him on an additional feed or two in the evening. the doc says i can start him on rice cereal, but i am worried about starting him on it and having allergies crop up ('they' say starting on solids too soon leads to food allergies in some kids). mimi started on rice at 4.5 months and has a severe peanut allergy...not sure if it was a direct result, but think i will play it a little safer w/ozzy and wait a tad bit longer.

ozzy's stats at 4 months compared to 2 mos/how he compared to mimi at this age (%tiles differ for boys and girls):
head circumference: 16 inches (75%), now it is 16.75 in (60%)/ 17 inches (95% for girls)
length: 23.5 inches (85%), now 25.5 inches (80%)/ 25.5 inches (90% for girls)
weight: 12.5 lbs (75%), now 14.5 (50%)/ 19 lbs (off the chart! 16 lbs is 95% for girls)

he's reached all the general milestones for this age: is tracking objects, turns to sounds (rob's voice, football on t.v., etc), social smiles, rolls from front to back on his own, can roll back to front w/a little assistance...i cross one leg over for him and then he does the rest, reaching and grasping, and gnawing on objects, babbling/cooing. he rarely ever refluxes anymore, but it could be because he still feeds so frequently, in small servings. he continues to sleep on his tummy for the most part. he prefers it. but he does lay on his back sometimes, but only for a short while before he starts protesting. he is sitting in the exersaucer on his own (no more than 5-10 min at a time, 2 times a day). mostly he's on his tummy on the floor. blows raspberries. giggles when tickled. continues to suck on fists, four fingers, thumb, or varying combinations of the three involving both hands.

he continues to take short 20-30 min naps every two hours and feeds every two hours from 7:30 am until 7:30 pm. usually sleeps around 7:30, up to feed at 3:30 a.m., sleeps, feeds again at 5:30, sleeps, and feeds again at 7:30 and is up for the day. recently, perhaps due to a growth spurt, he's been waking to feed at 9:30 pm. hopefully my supply will be up soon and he'll be able to cut that out.

Rainbow Magic Birthday (Mimi's 7th Birthday)

this year was a particularly difficult year to plan mimi's birthday.  after rob's dad became terminally ill, i didnt think it was good time for a party for mimi and her friends, so we decided it was best to skip a party this year and just have a quiet family dinner out.  then after dad passed and we slowly started to get back into our routines again, we all began to feel bad about not having a party for mimi, so we decided to have a party after all...although, a much belated party. mimi said she really wanted to have a party here at the house.  she really really really wanted it here, so i told her she could, if she kept it small.  since she was turning seven, i allowed her to invite seven friends. then i tasked her with thinking up a theme, and she finally settled on a favorite book series of hers called Rainbow Magic .  how perfect...each of the book sets in the series showcases 7 fairies, whether they be the rainbow fairies, the gem fairies, the party fai...

Gardening My Albatross

sometimes when i think about giving up on life in general, and sitting like a blob all day, unbidden my mind fills up with images of a neglected garden turning brown, rotting, dying, and thats often enough motivation to keep going, if for no other reason than to prevent the desolation from becoming reality.  is it weird that when i think of dying one day, that i get sad knowing my garden will die when i am gone?  i dont think anyone else would go tend to it when i am no longer around.  i hope they will at least keep a plant or two in remembrance of me, but the little pollinator waystation i've been working for several years now to create will likely be razed and no more.

Growing Things

it's crazy how long it's been since the last time i blogged here.  i spend so much time on insta and facebook, this blog has been largely ignored.  i'm on my second year of gardening and have been trying to maintaining a physical gardening log and failed at several attempts.  So i think this may be my best bet.  So here's the first gardening entry! Today is March 29th, 2022. Temps today were unseasonably cold and have been for the past three days.  Todays high temp was 47F and the low tonight will be 22F.  But should warm to the low 70s tomorrow.    This crazy cold and heavy winds yesterday blew down several daffodils.  many are leaning but upright enough that i left them and only pruned the ones that were knocked to the ground.
