this morning we attended the Tae Kwon Do Super Challenge (at the Northern Va C.C. Cultural Center) where a number of different jhoon rhee schools were represented and competing. boy was it ever loud and overwhelming in that gym! for the earlier part of the time we were in there, mimi spent most of it with her hands over her ears and sort of dazed and confused. she did eventually start to settle in, but the whole experience continued to be pretty overwhelming!
mimi's involvement in the tournament was to compete in the 3-4 year old division in the Kamsah where each school competed and in bumper sparring. here's a clip of the school, Lead By Example, that got the gold medal for the Kamsah... then following that is mimi's group (just the two kids from JR Falls Church)...they earned the bronze medal...but i have to note, there were only 3 schools competing in this event. i put the two on here so you have a basis for comparison. rob and i were totally cracking up over mimi's performance...i think some of the judges were too.
in mimi's defense, she's only been doing this for two months, and only attending once a week. the kids in colored uniforms and with colored belts have been involved in the sport longer and attend 2-3 times a week, such as the boy who is standing next to mimi. i am confident that with some more practice she'll do fantastic. she really does enjoy her TKD class, so we'll continue with this. the tournament was a pretty intense experience for her b/c of her inexperience, but still i thought it was a worthwhile experience for her. she loved getting the medals and hopes to get one of the big trophies one day.
here's her bumper sparring bout. once again, rob and i were totally cracking up. mimi did put up a good fight though...she was atleast making an effort to block her head a couple of times and got a few good in herself. out of five girls she placed 3rd...not bad! you can hear rob in the background yelling at her to 'sweep the leg'...his tribute to karate kid. here's she sparring with a girl from the arlington jhoon rhee...which had a monstrous group of 3-4 year olds as part of their showing and all the kids seemed to be quite regimented!
