the pollen this year must be something. rob started off the spring feeling like he'd gotten sick with a bad cold again (and again needing me to remind him that maybe it's allergies and not a cold). and ozzy, poor thing, this past week, his little face puffed out like he'd been in a boxing match and lost badly. it started a little over a week ago, we went to preschool and his teacher brought in maple seeds for the kids to investigate and throw around and watch as they spun their way down like mini helicopters. immediately after, ozzy's eyes became irritated. a week later, he was so red and puffy, the inner membrane of his eyes will so inflamed and swollen, they were literally swelling out of his eyes.
the quick trip to the pediatrician with the advice to stay indoors if we can, dont open windows, wash frequently. medications, over the counter childrens zyrtec (generic cetirizine), over the counter antihistamine eye drops (i bought Zaditor, which says on it safe for kids 3 and up), and then a prescription for Nasonex.
the eye drops work like magic...immediate relief. i didnt get the zyrtec but did get the nasonex and while it's supposed to be a cumulative thing that builds up in the system, by the second evening, he did seem to be breathing easier at bedtime.
(UPDATE: ended up not using zyrtec since i heard from the doc that she uses it with her own child and doesnt really see a difference. but she kepts using it anyway. if it doesnt help, i'd prefer not to dose my kid. no??? we did the flonase, but after a couple of days of him refusing to eat anything, i'd started to suspect the meds were interfering with his appetite. i took him off the flonase and he seemed okay as far as allergies go, but shortly after stopping the corticosteroid, he began to have massive nose bleeds. not just a trickle of blood, but so profuse that he was gagging on it and it was EVERYWHERE. so now we are down to eye drops as needed (which really was the worst of his allergies) and doing our best to minimize exposure to pollen)
as more of a preventative measure, he's been wearing his goggles and face mask outside, esp on the windier days when pollen is a-flyin'. he reminds me of Racer X from Speed Racer with his helmet on too. lol
and then how cute is he with his knee pads on over his cargo pants? i love this boy to pieces!
we bought him a 'big boy' bike. he was SO excited about getting the pads and gloves! he puts them on and laughs and says, "i look SO COOL!!!"
