visiting new york

We had a last minute opportunity to go to NYC with DH.  course the latter part is supposed to be on the down low, so shhhh.  (DH was acting all secretive, like he was undercover or something, so people wouldnt be all, what? you brought your whole family???  it was rather amusing.  it was really nice of him to let us tag along, esp since i snore and hotel rooms fire up adrenaline in the kids and you might as well be speaking Navi because they dont understand the words, "Be quiet" all of a sudden.)

Mimi was so so so happy to finally go see the Big Apple (which she took literally, and asked me where the big apple was).  she has wanted to visit for a long time.  as soon as i found out we might be going, i told her.  then it looked like the plans fell thru.  so i told her we werent going.  and she cried and cried.  then the trip was back on.  and it was like she was afraid to believe us the second time, since i'd already cried 'wolf' on her once before.  poor thing.

we left monday evening, b/c DH had a charity golf thing all day.  the kids asked ALL day, when are we going to new york?  we're never going to go!  are you sure we're going? and i regretted saying anything at all...better just to spring it on them the hour before leaving.  i can never seem to learn.

ozzy was so excited about riding a train up to nyc.  but the long cab ride to Union Station put him to sleep and i was almost afraid he'd miss the whole boarding experience and seeing the trains from the outside, but it was a needless worry.  the second we reached the platform and he heard the motors running, he shot up from his stroller, eyes wide, and excitement building, and any residue of sleep immediately wiped from his system.

then came the part where for the next 3.5 hrs i had to keep his excitement down, make him stay seated and stop shouting at everything he saw passing by our window.  and when he finally started to tire of the experience, the rest of the trip was spent answering his are-we-there-yet?s and me plying him with snacks to keep him appeased and any tantrums at bay until we arrived at New York Penn Station.

Mimi was great on the train.  played with her Leapster Explorer, read books, and later as the train continued to blast the AC and icicles formed on our blue noses, she huddled with ozzy and me under her thick fuzzy baby blanket and pillow pet which she insisted on bringing even tho the heat index the past week was over 100 degrees F and i ranted about carrying all that extra stuff.  i gladly ate crow as i huddled under a small corner of her baby blanket (which was just a bit bigger than a dinner napkin) with the kids.

it was late when we arrived in the city, but a good opportunity to see all the lights!  they were quite excited about being in NY!  but our sightseeing would have to wait until the next day, as it was after 10pm when we got to town.

here's a pic of the view from our room.  next is Mimi checking out our map of manhattan.  and of course times square.  and we met up with my cousin Do at Ellen's Stardust for lunch, which Mimi liked, but ozzy thought it was too loud.  unfortunately no one was able to sing any of Ozzy's favorite songs, otherwise i think he would've liked it.   you see him holding a box, which contains Crabby the boat from Cars 2 from the NY Disney Store, which wasn't nearly as much fun as the Toys R Us.

Rainbow Magic Birthday (Mimi's 7th Birthday)

this year was a particularly difficult year to plan mimi's birthday.  after rob's dad became terminally ill, i didnt think it was good time for a party for mimi and her friends, so we decided it was best to skip a party this year and just have a quiet family dinner out.  then after dad passed and we slowly started to get back into our routines again, we all began to feel bad about not having a party for mimi, so we decided to have a party after all...although, a much belated party. mimi said she really wanted to have a party here at the house.  she really really really wanted it here, so i told her she could, if she kept it small.  since she was turning seven, i allowed her to invite seven friends. then i tasked her with thinking up a theme, and she finally settled on a favorite book series of hers called Rainbow Magic .  how perfect...each of the book sets in the series showcases 7 fairies, whether they be the rainbow fairies, the gem fairies, the party fai...

Gardening My Albatross

sometimes when i think about giving up on life in general, and sitting like a blob all day, unbidden my mind fills up with images of a neglected garden turning brown, rotting, dying, and thats often enough motivation to keep going, if for no other reason than to prevent the desolation from becoming reality.  is it weird that when i think of dying one day, that i get sad knowing my garden will die when i am gone?  i dont think anyone else would go tend to it when i am no longer around.  i hope they will at least keep a plant or two in remembrance of me, but the little pollinator waystation i've been working for several years now to create will likely be razed and no more.

Growing Things

it's crazy how long it's been since the last time i blogged here.  i spend so much time on insta and facebook, this blog has been largely ignored.  i'm on my second year of gardening and have been trying to maintaining a physical gardening log and failed at several attempts.  So i think this may be my best bet.  So here's the first gardening entry! Today is March 29th, 2022. Temps today were unseasonably cold and have been for the past three days.  Todays high temp was 47F and the low tonight will be 22F.  But should warm to the low 70s tomorrow.    This crazy cold and heavy winds yesterday blew down several daffodils.  many are leaning but upright enough that i left them and only pruned the ones that were knocked to the ground.
