it has been a long time since i posted last! i have a lot of catching up to do! still havent posted about ozzy's bday party and that was JULY! just a lot going on...what with the flooding and school starting for both kids. (oh the flooding...that will have to be a separate post. )
ozzy is 26 months old now. yesterday, he pooped in the potty. the second time, ever.
later this evening, as i read with the kids in bed...that i noticed a change here too. usually when i read with ozzy, i point out various conventions of print, letter/sound recognition, sight words, etc. if i get too 'teachy' he pushes the book away and wants to read a different book. so it's a fine balance between keeping it interesting but still teaching tidbits here and there without losing his attention. generally he likes books, but it's not always easy to sustain attention. tonight however, i could not make him stop reading. book after book, he wanted to read with me, and not only that, but he was also surprisingly amenable to whatever i asked of him. he read all the sight words (of which he knows 45), and filled in the blanks when i'd trail off in reading, and identified the beginning sounds to words. and i also noticed that he didnt just hand me a book saying, "read this!" or "read Thomas!" "read Biscuit!" , tonight, he handed me books and called them each by the title (rather than the subject!). "mom, let's read "The Red Shed" or "Win The Race" or "Get On The Bus." curious to see if he was just recognizing the covers and remembering the names or really recognizing more words, i pointed to some words that were not part of his repertoire of sight words and he was able to read most of the words that i pointed to. (there was one book where he kept reading "but" instead of "tub"...which made the story quite funny to say everything was happening in the 'but' instead of the 'tub.' so the story goes "the pup is in the tub!" but he would read, "the pup is in the but. ruff. ruff. ruff. the truck is in the but. mud. mud. mud." i couldn't help cracking up. guess you had to be there.)
it's been interesting to see how different ozzy is from mimi at school. whereas mimi stayed neat and generally followed directions, ozzy is kind of everywhere, and thinks it's funny to do the opposite of what he's supposed to. what? it's time to gather? no, thanks, i think i'll lay down in the cozy nook. come gather? no, the rocking chair needs me to rock it furiously.
he seems to enjoy school and doesnt seem worried at all when i leave, unlike mimi who had to be peeled off of me, terrified of being left at school. i just tell him i am going to the store but i'll be back to pick him up at playground time. he dismisses me before i'm even done talking, 'okay, mom. see you waiter (later)!" he says without even looking up from the toys.
he seems to get along with his classmates and hasnt had any issues, so that's a relief. he calls his classmates, "all the children" as in, "mom, i like school. i like to see all the children." or "where are all the children?" it amuses me that he calls his peers "children." not friends or kids. children.
