we are at 21 months...in three more months we will be TWO

i say this every time, i can't believe ozzy is going to be two this year.  it's just a few months away.  he'll be in preschool this fall.  i know i sound like a broken record, but i just can't comprehend how this can be happening so fast!  now he is 21 months old.  such a big boy.  and yet, to me, he's still my baby.  i remind myself to really look at him whenever i have a chance to cuddle him or change him.  to see every bit of him so i dont forget it.  i take in every delectable bit of baby fat and try to remember every line and curve on him.  i know it will start to fade next year.  when he sleeps i stare at the round fullness of the chub of his cherubic cheeks and like any mom looking at her sleeping child, i cant help but mentally sing, 'he is perfection."

today, he told me he was going to poop in the potty.  he drags out the insert from his bjorn potty seat and plops himself down (still wearing a diaper), sits for a spell, then gets up, puts the insert back in.  "did you poop?" i asked him.  "yes!"  he says.  when i check his diaper, sure enough, there's poop.  not sure if he pooped while he was sitting on the potty or if he had pooped first and then decided to sit on the potty after the fact.  the world may never know.

on sunday, rob and i took the kids to see Nick Jr Storytime Live at the warner theater.  mimi loved it and ozzy only seemed to like the opening parts of each show, since he recognized the theme songs to the nick jr shows (backyardigans, dora, wonder pets, kai-lan).  when the show started he kept fighting me to run towards the stage...i think he wanted to get up close to kai-lan, toh-lee, rin-too, and ho-ho.  after 45 min of the show he was done and could only bear to watch small parts, like when swiper the fox enters the stage.  he liked that part.  he loves to say, "swiper no swiping!"  any time he sees any picture of a fox in any book, he'll say, "swiper! no swiping!  oh, man!"

since taking ozzy to the national zoo about a month ago, he has been so in love with seeing the animals that we have been going to the zoo at least once a week (yes, we are now FONZ members).  his favorite seems to be the meerkats.  who knew meerkats were so darn cute!  there's one large glass enclosure that has three meerkats in it.  two are pretty tame, one of which almost looks sedated, it seems to sleep all the time and rarely moves.  and the third one is like an ADHD meerkat on red bull (gives you wiiiiiings!).  ozzy ADORES that one.  he'll run around the glass chasing him and pretending to grab him, yelling, "I got you!"  we'll spend a long time there with ozzy yelling out, "Meerkats!  Meerkats!" over and over.  i think part of the appeal is they get so close to us.  so many of the animals hang out so far away from where the people are, but that meerkat gets right up to the glass and is right at ozzy's height.  but if you ask him what his favorite animal at the zoo is, he'll say elephants.

this is the month that ozzy got addicted to Thomas the Train.  he demands the show over and over.  (*sigh).   a friend gave me some of the thomas train things her sons outgrew and ozzy loves it all so much that he would not be parted from it.  i set out all the train toys in the basement and when it's time to go back upstairs, he cries.  every morning he wakes up and asks to go downstairs to play with the trains...this after he's watched several episodes of the show in the morning after waking up at the most uncivilized hour of 6 a.m. so i'm only too happy to turn on the "Babysitter" and put it on "play all"...and even then grumble that there's no "Repeat Play All" as i give him some milk, cuddle him next to me, and promptly fall into a light snooze while he watches his show.

i think my favorite area of development is his speech.  he's now saying short sentences.  for example, today, while eating his frozen Gogurt, a piece broke off and fell on the floor.  he comes running over to me and says, "oh no!  mama, yogurt fall down!"  "it did?  show me!"  i say.  and he goes scurrying over to where the yogurt is sitting on the floor.   he's saying so many words now, that i can't keep up with all the new things he's saying and it often takes me awhile to decipher it.  some of them i can't figure out.  like he keeps saying what sounds like "opentruck"  not sure what that is.

another day, he knocked on the closet door and says, "mama.  grandpa crying inside."  ????  hunh????

IMG_0291the newest development this month is that we began wearing underwear.  if he werent starting preschool in the fall, i could go indefinitely with him running around the house half naked, peeing in the potty whenever he feels like going, but since he cant do that in preschool, i've got to teach him to pull down and pull up his pants so he can do it himself at school during potty breaks and to break him of the habit of going in his diapers.

so i bought up whatever undies i could find that depicted any kind of vehicle on them (planes, trains, motorcycles, etc) and he was quite thrilled with them (now if i can find Thomas undies...shooo...he might think twice about wetting those!)  i put the new undies on ozzy and tell him not to pee in his undies.  of course he does...he thinks he's wearing diapers.

since the weather has been nice, i've been able to practice outside, so that minimizes the mess inside when the accidents happen and i dont bother with the plastic training covers.  we went thru two pairs of undies the first day.  another two pairs the second day.  (each of these episodes happen in less than an hour).  and day three, he only wet one pair and kept the second pair dry for the hour.  i think it helped that we took more frequent bathroom breaks.  the previous accidents were partly my fault because i think i spaced the potty breaks a bit too far out.  he holds better when the diapers are off, but it seems that when they are on he must be going more frequently, so i have to remember to take more frequent potty breaks with him to prevent accidents.

as perfect as i think he is, i know he's become the "baby BOTHER" to mimi.  today, as he drowned one of her puppets in the toilet, she sighs and says to me, "why dont we just give him away?"  when pressed for why he should go and not her, she says, "because i dont do bad things!"  i had to remind of of all the walls she colored with markers as a child and all the ways she made messes when she was little.  she used to turn the t.v. off whenever rob or i was watching it.  constantly tore down all the cds off the shelves every day.  tore apart her pop up books when i wasnt looking.  threw forks and spoons and balls down the air vents.  turned on the oven at my parents house to "CLEAN" while there were pans in there.  the list goes on!  the only difference is, there was no siblings around for her to inconvenience when she did it.

Rainbow Magic Birthday (Mimi's 7th Birthday)

this year was a particularly difficult year to plan mimi's birthday.  after rob's dad became terminally ill, i didnt think it was good time for a party for mimi and her friends, so we decided it was best to skip a party this year and just have a quiet family dinner out.  then after dad passed and we slowly started to get back into our routines again, we all began to feel bad about not having a party for mimi, so we decided to have a party after all...although, a much belated party. mimi said she really wanted to have a party here at the house.  she really really really wanted it here, so i told her she could, if she kept it small.  since she was turning seven, i allowed her to invite seven friends. then i tasked her with thinking up a theme, and she finally settled on a favorite book series of hers called Rainbow Magic .  how perfect...each of the book sets in the series showcases 7 fairies, whether they be the rainbow fairies, the gem fairies, the party fai...

Gardening My Albatross

sometimes when i think about giving up on life in general, and sitting like a blob all day, unbidden my mind fills up with images of a neglected garden turning brown, rotting, dying, and thats often enough motivation to keep going, if for no other reason than to prevent the desolation from becoming reality.  is it weird that when i think of dying one day, that i get sad knowing my garden will die when i am gone?  i dont think anyone else would go tend to it when i am no longer around.  i hope they will at least keep a plant or two in remembrance of me, but the little pollinator waystation i've been working for several years now to create will likely be razed and no more.

Growing Things

it's crazy how long it's been since the last time i blogged here.  i spend so much time on insta and facebook, this blog has been largely ignored.  i'm on my second year of gardening and have been trying to maintaining a physical gardening log and failed at several attempts.  So i think this may be my best bet.  So here's the first gardening entry! Today is March 29th, 2022. Temps today were unseasonably cold and have been for the past three days.  Todays high temp was 47F and the low tonight will be 22F.  But should warm to the low 70s tomorrow.    This crazy cold and heavy winds yesterday blew down several daffodils.  many are leaning but upright enough that i left them and only pruned the ones that were knocked to the ground.
