I decided to stop adding to the blog on windows live spaces. 1. i can't get streaming video working properly on that one. 2. now that we are expecting another baby, i think it only fair that i create a 'family' blog, rather than just 'mimi's space'. So to kick off the new year properly, i've started the Im Family blog.
One new year's resolution that i've already resolved to make is to learn to lay off mimi and not be too critical of her. i recently realized this was something i needed to make a conscious effort to do when i came to watch mimi's ballet 'performance' at school two days ago.
we arrived for the lesson and mimi says, right off the bat, "mom, i'm not very good at ballet." i'm thinking that's nonsense. of course you are! but instead i say to mimi, "sweetie, all that matters is that you do your best and HAVE FUN!" "okay, mom" says mimi and rejoins the rest of the girls.
and then the 'performance' began and i found myself cringing at mimi's antics. sometimes she wasn't paying attention. sometimes she was off task...hugging on other girls at inappropriate times, yelling out and waving "hi mom!" several times throughout the performance, concerned with her shoelaces and not continuing the performance, or just doing the wrong thing. after ballet was over, i fought mightily with the urge to tell her what she did wrong. i just kept reminding myself how she started the day saying she wasn't good at ballet. this was something she already knew and didnt need me to criticize her additionally. despite it all, it was clear to me that she was enjoying the class and clearly having fun. so, i kept saying it over and over again..."as long as she is having fun"
so instead at the end of class i asked her, did you enjoy yourself? and she gave a resounding 'yes!' and i said, 'i could tell you were having a good time. i enjoyed the show very much."
here's a small clip of mimi at ballet. this is the start when the girls came in to warm up. note how mimi interprets the teachers direction on good posture. she is also the shortest kid in the class...she's tiny! she is also one of the youngest. most of the girls are already 4 years old.
